How the landscape forgets a landslide

Many processes in physical geography takes place over very long periods of time. Because we can't sit and watch the landscape for thousands of years, geographers use numerical models to simulate and better understand these processes. This numerical model animation shows the combined effects of thousands of years of weathering and soil creep on the deep scar left by a landslide. These processes smooth out the scar, which completely disappears within 10,000 years. An important consideration for hazards research, as evidence of hazards may be hidden by the effects of time.
