Studying volcanoes enables us to predict, prepare, prevent and respond to the hazards posed by volcanic eruptions. This is Volcanic Crisis Management: actions that can mean the difference between a spectacular natural event and a devastating natural disaster.
In this video, we team up with experts Dr Jane Boygle and Dr Iestyn Barr to discover how geographers and geoscientists manage volcanic hazards. We begin by assessing volcanic risk as the combination of hazard, vulnerability and capacity to cope. We then investigate how mitigation can be used to reduce risk, including:
- • Engineering and land use planning to mitigate hazards
- • The role of insurance in disaster recovery
- • Building resilience to reduce vulnerability, through monitoring, communication and careful management of evacuations and returning after an eruption.
To develop this series, we teamed up with leading education travel provider Rayburn Tours. To find out about inspiring geography trips to Iceland and the island of Heimaey, visit Rayburn Tours | Group travel and school trip specialists since 1965.
